Crystal Lake High School Program Information

Program Information

This program is designed for dedicated wrestlers aged 13-18 that consistently train and compete year-round in Folkstyle, Freestyle and/or Greco-Roman. The High School program student generally competes throughout the High School (Folkstyle) season as well as expanding their knowledge, skill level, and experience throughout the year. Enrollment is available for both the Pre-Season and Post-Season (year-round), Pre-Season only, or Post-Season only, depending on class space and well-matched training partners.

High School students will build on their existing knowledge and skills by committing themselves to hard training, intense drilling, and competitive live wrestling. Students will achieve a higher level by participating in training, drilling, live wrestling, and in-depth instruction through: 1) exposure to technique and training that is currently used at the elite college and international levels (e.g., Olympic training techniques); 2) practices that are intense and challenging to students; and 3) immersion in an environment that will push physical and competitive limitations and increase mental toughness.

  • Post-Season: The focus of the first portion of this program (March, April, May) will be on Freestyle and the remaining portion (June) will be on both Freestyle and Folkstyle. The training plan consists of a systematic approach to advanced technique and structured drilling, along with plenty of live wrestling. Organized training sessions will focus on wrestling technique for each style, including all three positions (feet, top, bottom), and strategies to prepare students for success at the numerous spring/summer in-state, regional, and national competitions, as well as the next season.

  • Pre-Season: The focus of this session will be solely Folkstyle wrestling. The training plan consists of a systematic approach to advanced technique, structured drilling, and building relentless conditioning for the Folkstyle season. With the start of competition just around the corner, the Pre-season is a prime time to gain new skills and enhance existing ones, sharpen reactions, and improve timing.

  • In-Season: Training for the In-Season is available only to students that are enrolled in programs for the current year and have a valid USA Wrestling card. No guests will be permitted to participate. Private lesson classes for the In-Season will be held on Sundays. Given the busy schedule of the high school wrestling season, these sessions will be on a walk-in basis. The agenda for every Sunday private lesson class will include: trouble-shooting, technique, drilling, and maintaining motivation, as well as optional hard wrestling and/or conditioning. Students will focus on the area(s) of their choice on a week-by-week basis with the assistance of OVERTIME staff.
  • Please note that IHSA guidelines will be enforced throughout the In-Season program, which limits attendance of students from the same high school to two students per high school for each Sunday private lesson class. If more than two students from the same high school regularly attend OVERTIME and plan to participate in a Sunday private lesson class, it is the students' responsibility to communicate among themselves and determine which two students will be attending on a given Sunday.
