Overtime Wrestling Finishes Spring 2011 Strong, Looks Ahead to Summer Contests

The Overtime School of Wrestling has produced champions at all levels so far this spring, from kids and Cadet levels all the way up through the USA Wrestling Senior Open. Up ahead this summer are a slew 2011 national and world championship competitions, which will see Overtime wrestlers compete everywhere from Fargo, North Dakota to Budapest, Hungary, to Bucarest, Romania.

Below is a rundown of the national and international competitions in summer of 2011 that current and former Overtime wrestlers will be competing at as they continue their quests to be world champions:

FILA Senior & FILA University
Next tournaments:
2011 Senior World Team Trials
Oklahoma City, OK
June 9-11, 2011

2011 FILA Senior World Championships
Istanbul, Turkey
September 12-18, 2011

At the FILA Senior level, Jake Herbert (84kg) headlined Overtime wrestlers’ accomplishments this spring with his third consecutive USAW Senior Open championship. Matt Gentry (74kg) won the Canadian Open at his weight class without getting scored on. Mike Poeta (74kg) and Josh Churella (66kg) took fifth place and sixth place, respectively, at the US Open to qualify for the 2011 World Team Trials. All of those wrestlers are centering their training at Overtime in their quest to make the 2012 Olympic team, although Poeta will be missing the 2011 World Team Trials due to injury.

Also competing at the 2011 US Senior World Team Trials are FILA University national champions Brandon Precin (55kg) and Andrew Howe (74kg), both former Overtime School of Wrestling students who regularly visit Overtime to train as well. Howe is a former NCAA National Champion who currently wrestles for the Wisconsin Badgers. Former Overtime School of Wrestling student Max Nowry (55kg) won FILA University Nationals in Greco-Roman wrestling after placing seventh earlier in the spring at the US Senior Open, and he will be competing at the Trials in Greco-Roman.

Other athletes who have come in to train with Overtime’s world class coaching staff leading up to the US Open and World Team Trials this spring have included Kyle Ruschell (66kg), who won fifth place at the US Open, two-time Canadian World Team member John Pineda (60kg), NCAA National Champion Angel Escobedo (55kg), and long-time Overtime wrestler Andy Hrovat (84kg), who is spending three weeks at Overtime between his stays in Ossetia.

All of these wrestlers are preparing to compete at the FILA Senior World Team Trials in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, on June 9, 2011 (there is no University world championship this year).

Matt Gentry will face Evan MacDonald in the Canada Cup on July 1, 2011. The two will face off in a best-of-three series of matches, but Gentry goes into the event with a 1-0 lead in matches by virtue of having won the Canadian Open this spring.

FILA Junior
Next tournament:
2011 FILA Junior World Championships
Bucarest, Romania

Lee Munster (84kg) won the FILA Junior National Championship and followed it up with first place finish at the FILA World Team Trials to qualify for the FILA Junior World Championships in freestyle wrestling in Bucarest, Romania on July 26-31, 2011. Munster was an Overtime student in high school, and he continues to train with Overtime.
